  21. When I Try and Select a Message in One of My IMAP Folders, I Get The Message "Mailbox Doesn't Exist"
  1. When I log into Webmail, I get an error "Page Expired"

The "Page Expired" error will come up if you don't immediately login to webmail when your browser displays the page. Simply enter your CNetID and CNet password again and you'll be fine. The "Page Expired" error will also be displayed if you have bookmarked anything but http://webmail.uchicago.edu. In addition, this error appears to be affecting all users now, with people getting a "Page Expired" error regardless of what they put into the username and password field. However, once you get the "Page Expired" error, you will be able to login. This is a server-side problem that NSIT is currently investigating.
  2. What is cMail?

cMail is the new NSIT service for University of Chicago email. The cMail system should be much more reliable and usable system for University email. Like any major change, however, there are differences, both good and bad, between cMail and previous NSIT systems. cMail went live Sunday, February 27th, 2005.
  3. My password doesn't work with Webmail anymore!

If the password you are typing is more than eight characters, only type the first eight characters.

Your password actually is only eight characters, but at some time during the 2002 recertification effort, the system accepted passwords longer than eight characters and silently truncated them. Additionally, the old Webmail (and email system in general) only accepted the first eight characters of your password. The new system accepts passwords longer than eight characters.

  4. Since I created a filter, I haven't gotten any new mail!

If you haven't received any email since you created a filter, the first thing you want to do is go back and disable the filter! A common mistake when using the new filter system is to select "Apply to All Messages" after you've created a more specific rule. "Apply to All Messages" rules apply to all messages, regardless of any other criteria you've specified.

  5. How do I save my sorting preferences in Webmail?

The current version of Webmail will not save your sorting preferences. We are working on making this available in future versions (hopefully very soon).

  6. How do I make messages disappear once I delete them in Webmail?

If your preferences are set to mark messages as deleted, they will still be in your inbox until you hit "Purge Deleted" If you'd like messages to disappear automatically, you can set your preferences to move messages to the trash instead of deleting them. Go to Preference, select "Yes" for "Delete to Trash", and make sure a Trash mailbox is selected in "Trash Folder".

Before you do this, you may want to purge deleted messages that have been marked for deletion but are still in your mailboxes. Once you made the appropriate changes, scroll down to the end of the page and click "OK" to save your changes.

  7. My address book is imported, but there's a bunch of junk!

Unfortunately, the address book format from the old Webmail system was pretty bad. In general, while importing the address books we tried to import good address book entries and discard bad ones. When in doubt, however, we imported it and let the user make the distinction.

  8. How do I include the original message in my response?

Go to Preferences → Reply and set one of the "Include original ..." options. "Include orginal inline" is the behavior most people expect.

  9. How can I use advanced email/spam filtering (e.g. SpamAssassin) on another system to "tag" my mail? What X-header will be recognized by the cMail filters?

This header is not currently available for filtering. The "X-Uchicago-Meta" header can be used for whatever filtering you like. It is available in the cMail filters list accessible via the filtering "Options" in webmail.uchicago.edu.

  10. How do I display my messages in plain text?

Currently you cannot disable html display in Webmail. We have requested a patch for this and hope to make this option available soon.

  11. How do I change the number of messages displayed on a page?

Go to Preferences → Message Count and change the number to however you want displayed per page. Please note, the higher the number, the longer the page will take to load.

  12. How do I move to my first/last message?

To move between several pages of messages, type in the message number (or approximate message number) in the field next to the "Go to" button, then hit "Go to." The beginning of your mailbox start with message "1", while the end will be the whatever number of messages in your inbox, as reported above (in the line reading X number of messages for Your Name").

  13. I can't search anymore using Eudora 5.2!

The Windows version of Eudora 5.2's search function doesn't work against the cMail system. If you are having this problem, we recommend you upgrade to the version of Eudora included in the latest Connectivity Package or, more generically, any version of Eudora later than 5.2.

  14. I'm getting prompted by Eudora in Mac OS X

Mac OS X users running Eudora should be prompted with a certificate warning saying, "You connected to a server which returned this SSL certificate that is not in your keychain. Would you like to add it to your keychain?"

Click on OK, and then quit Eudora and start it again. After that, it should be able to check email.

  15. When I check mail using Eudora on Mac OS 9, I get errors ...

Eudora users on Mac OS 9 will get a message prompting them about an Unknown SSL Certificate. They should accept the certificate, add the certificate to the keychain, and set Keychain Access to "Always Trust" this certificate.

  16. I can't see some folders using Outlook Express

Outlook Express users checking via IMAP may have issues viewing nested hierachies (mailboxes within mailboxes). Any mailboxes that are located within folders in their IMAP store may not be able to subscribe to those folders. To view those folders, either create a new mailbox with the name of the folder those mailboxes are within, or right click on your account listing, click on "IMAP folders", click on the mailbox you'd like to view, and click on the "Go To" button to view that mailbox. It should then appear in the mailbox listing.

  17. How do you see full headers in an email?

To see the full headers of a message, open the message and click on the "Open" button.

  18. My sent mail folder is displaying like a normal folder

Go to Preferences -> Sent Folder and make sure that the "official" sent mail folder is the one you are looking at. Webmail should provide an alternate view of whichever mailbox is in that field.

Once you made the appropriate changes, scroll down to the end of the page and click "OK" to save your changes

  19. I can't see all of my mailboxes in Apple Mail

If you can't see all of your mailboxes in Apple Mail, you probably need to refresh your mailbox list. Restart Apple Mail and you should see of your mailboxes.

If not, try the following steps:

    1. Go to the Mail menu then to Preferences.
    2. Click on your UChicago Account.
    3. Click on the Advanced tab.
    4. Make sure that "Automatically synchronize changed mailboxes" is checked.
    5. Make sure that nothing is in "IMAP Path Prefix".
    6. Make sure that the Port is 993 and that "Use SSL" is checked.
    7. Make sure that Authentication is set to "Password".
  20. When I try and select a message in one of my IMAP folders, I get the message "Mailbox Doesn't Exist"

Depending on the email client you are using, you may need to tell it to manually refresh your mailbox list. This most commonly happens in version 5 of Eudora. In Eudora, to refresh your mailbox list, open your mailbox list (Tools → Mailboxes), right click on "Dominant", and select "Refresh Mailbox List.".
