Webmail: Filtering Spam with cMail
cMail includes a powerful filtering system that can work hand in hand with Junkmail, NSIT's spam and virus filtering system. Junkmail processes all incoming mail and generates a spam score or percentage: messages over 90% are held by Junkmail and messages over 70% have their subject line modified to include the word spam.
You can use the cMail filtering system to read incoming mail's score and even more aggressively filter out messages. For this example, we'll move all messages marked 70% or higher to a folder named "Junk". In general, you can utilize the process that follows to pick whatever threshhold works best for your email experience.
- Log into https://webmail.uchicago.edu using your CNetID and password.
- First, create a folder to hold your Junk email, if you don't have one already:
- Click on "Folders"
- In the Add field at the top of this page, enter "Junk"
- Now that the folder has been created, click on "Options" on the left-hand menu and then "Filters"
- Add a filter to read a message's Junkmail rating:
- Under "Filter Conditions", select "If all of these conditions are met"
- For the first field (it should currently say "From"), click on the drop down menu and select "X-Uchicago-Spam:"
- Leave the next field (going right) as "Contains"
- Using roman numerals 10's (X's) enter the spam likelihood you want to trigger moving mail to your Junk folder. For our example, enter XXXXXXX (7 capital X's).
- Under "Filter Actions", click on the "Move To" drop-down menu and select the "Junk" folder.
- Finally, click "OK" and you should be finished!
