NSIT Email Server Information
If you are unable to find information on our website regarding your particular email client, you can use the information below to help configure the program you are using.
Please note, the information here is provided with no guarantees and will not be supported by NSIT technical support. The recommended and supported solution for accessing your NSIT email account is Mozilla Thunderbird as configured by the NSIT Connectivity Package. You can pick up the Connectivity Package free of charge from the Identification and Privileges Office or the Campus Computer Stores.
Incoming Mail Servers
NSIT provides both IMAP4 and POP3 access to its servers; IMAP is the recommended method for checking your mail. Whatever protocol you use must use SSL encryption to communicate with our servers. In general, this means setting your email program to connect via the Alternate Port SSL (on port 993 for IMAP or port 995 for POP).
IMAP Server: imap.uchicago.edu POP Server: pop.uchicago.edu
Please note that if you use POP as your mail protocol and leave mail on the server, the frequency with which you check mail will be restricted proportionately to the size of your inbox. We recommend IMAP mail access for most users.
Outgoing Mail Servers
SMTP Server: authsmtp.uchicago.edu
NSIT has an SSL-enabled SMTP server. It uses port 465 and requires a CNetID and password.
Directory Servers
You can query directory servers for information about individuals on campus; certain types of queries will be restricted if you are off campus. Correspondingly, your mileage may vary.
LDAP Server: ldap.uchicago.edu LDAP Base DN: ou=people,dc=uchicago,dc=edu
Note: due to recent infrastructure changes, ldap.uchicago.edu now requires that the Base DN be filled in to work properly. Previously, this was not required.
