Junkmail Summary
When Junkmail, NSIT's spam and virus filtering service, receives a message, it looks for certain message characteristics. If the message fits the filtering criteria, it is quarantined for user review.
Junkmail summary display the quarantined message's "From:" address, "Subject:", size, name of the sender, and date quarantined. By default, you will receive a daily summary via email, listing all mail that has been quarantined since your last summary. You can change the frequency of your junkmail summary emails by logging in to junkmail.uchicago.edu and clicking on the "Summaries" choice on the left sidebar.
The junkmail summary email also allows you to approve senders and specific emails for delivery to your inbox -- just click the appropriate link in the "Deliver" or "Approve" column. There is no need to manually clean out your quarantine, as emails quarantined will automatically expire; the digest will list this date for your reference.
Junkmail Summary Messages and Local Filters
Some email clients have built-in message filtering that can be enabled by the end user. These filters can result in summaries being filtered by the end user's email client. If your email client filters your mail for you, make sure that you have it configured not to filter your junkmail summary message as it would score highly as spam for most filters.
Opting Out of Junkmail Summary Messages (Not Recommend)
You can change the frequency of notification emails by logging in to Junkmail's web interface, clicking on the "Summaries" option on the left sidebar, and choosing the proper schedule. We strongly recommend sticking with the daily summaries. A short daily summary is much easier to deal with than a huge summary sent less frequently. In addition, you'll want to release important messages in a timely manner to avoid missing email.
