Setting up a Palm Treo 680 for xMail

This document applies to Cingular and AT&T phones.

Depending on the age of your 680, you may have to perform two upgrades to fully enable Exchange Activesync support.

See here for instructions on how to determine whether you need the upgrades and how to install them if you do.

Note: the upgrades will erase everything on your device. Be sure to Hotsync to back up your data before running any upgrades. All data will be returned with the first sync after upgrading.

Once the upgrades are done, install the Direct Push update found here.

After the above upgrades and updates have been installed successfully, you may then set up xMail.

  1. On the Treo, open Email.
  2. Go to Menu → Accounts → Account Setup.
  3. Click New. When prompted, enter:
    • Account Name: xMail
    • Mail Service: Exchange Activesync
  4. Click Next.
  5. When prompted, enter your username as: adlocal\CNetID. Your password is your CNet Password.
  6. Click Next.
  7. When prompted, enter the following:
    • Email Address: cnetid@uchicago.edu
    • Mail Server xmail.uchicago.edu
  8. Click Next.
  9. Click Advanced and ensure that SSL is selected. If it is not, select it.
  10. Click Next → Done.

At this point, you will get a message explaining that items on your device will be synced to the server and the first sync will remove duplicates so it may take longer than subsequent syncs. Click YES to begin synching.

Direct Push will be enabled automatically the first time that it connects to the server. If you wish to disable this or change the sync interval, see this page for instructions.
