How to Redirect Your xMail to Your cMail Account

The procedure for redirecting your xMail to your cMail account requires you to have a properly configured copy of Microsoft Outlook available. If you do not have a copy of Microsoft Outlook that is configured properly, please see our setup instructions. This is a configuration for advanced users and is unsupported.

Note: do not use this redirection unless you have removed your cnetid@ad.uchicago.edu forward from your cMail account. Do not redirect your mail to cnetid@uchicago.edu from within Outlook. Following both of these cautions will ensure you do not lose any email. This redirect can remove the cc: field from redirected emails as well as alter other header information. Changes are done by the server as mail is redirected and cannot be controlled.

To forward your cMail address to another location, see here.

To set up the redirect, do the following:

  1. Open Microsoft Outlook 2003.
  2. Go to Tools → Rules and Alerts.
  3. Click New Rule.
  4. Select "Start from a blank rule."
  5. Select "Check messages when they arrive."
  6. Click Next.
  7. On the "What condition(s) do you want to check?" window, do not select anything. Click Next again. You will be warned that, "This rule will be applied to every message you receive. Is this correct?" Select Yes.
  8. On the "What do you want to do with the message?" window, check the "redirect it to people or distribution list" choice.
  9. In the lower half of the window, click on people or distribution list. In the Rule Address window that pops up, type cnetid@midway.uchicago.edu into the "Specify to whom to forward messages:" box. Click OK.
  10. Click Next.
  11. In the "Are there any exceptions?" window, do not check anything. Click Next.
  12. In the "Finish rule setup" window, choose a name for the rule. "Turn on this rule" should be checked. Do not check the "Run this rule now" choice. Click Finish.
