Manual Dialup Settings for UC Modem Pool

Problem:

I'd like to setup a dial-up connection to the University of Chicago modem pool. What do I fill in for all the fields?

Solution:

To set up modem dialup to the University's modem pool, we recommend most users install the Connectivity Package, which will properly configure the connection for current Macintosh or Windows machines.

Some users, however, may have a machine that is not supported by the Connectivity Package (because it has an out of date version of Windows or Macintosh or an unsupported OS like Linux, etc.) or may simply wish to set up their machine manually. This page will provide the basic information you will need to make a connection. NSIT does not support manually configured connections; it will be up to you to properly configure the PPP and TCP/IP settings with this information to get the connection to work.

PPP Settings:

  • Dialup number: 773 926 1600
  • Modem Speed/Protocols: up to 56K bps, V.92 and earlier protocols
  • Communication Protocol: PPP
  • Authentication Protocol: PAP (standard). No connection script needed.
  • Username: your CNetID
  • Password: your CNet password

TCP/IP Settings:

  • IP Address: Obtain from PPP server
  • Subnet Mask: Obtain from PPP server
  • Router Address: Obtain from PPP server
  • Name Server Addresses: Obtain automatically from PPP server.

In many cases, configuration will be as simple as creating a new connection using the correct phone number and username.
